Twenty years! Who could have guessed when Fresh Sound began in 1997 that the series would survive, let alone have reached the milestone of two decades and 200 concerts? We are thrilled to announce our 2017 concert lineup which focuses on artists who have a history with the series.

Matt Welch – solo bagpipes

Michael Dessen Trio with special guests Nicole Mitchell and Joshua White

Active since 2003, the Michael Dessen Trio has been praised by critics for its unique blend of intricate composition, open improvisation and live electronics. With three releases on Clean Feed Records and a fourth coming in 2017, the band is especially known for their immersive, continuous live sets and for recordings produced with the same spirit. The trio has been supported with awards and commissions from the Fromm Foundation, New Music USA and Chamber Music America, and for this performance they will premiere new works designed to feature renowned guests Nicole Mitchell (flute) and Joshua White (piano). More biographical information...

Vicky Chow – solo piano

Praised for her virtuosic and nuanced performances of contemporary works, Canadian pianist Vicky Chow is recognized as "one of our era's most brilliant pianists" (Pitchfork). Making her return to San Diego this November for the 20th anniversary of the audacious series Fresh Sound, Chow brings with her an array of newly commissioned prepared piano and electronic works, including a selection from her critically–acclaimed newly released album A O R T A by LA–based composer Daniel Wohl.   More biographical information...
