Fresh Sound Music is a series of experimental, electronic, contemporary classical and improvised music. We avoid the mainstream.

FRESH SOUND MUSIC SERIES AT SPACE 4 ART

Spring 2012 Season » Focus on New York

Fresh Sound is not stuck in any particular style of music but is dedicated to bringing to San Diego music that is new, and as we proclaim, fresh. We plan to lavish you with glorious sounds, therefore we’ll just say that the music will be composed and improvised, acoustic and electronic, contemporary and traditional; the concerts will include music which grooves and doesn't, is really loud and very quiet, some familiar and often not. All of it will be delicious and will leave you hungering for more.

As Fresh Sound series consists of concerts that focus on a theme, the upcoming Fresh Sound music series will feature musicians from New York. Bonnie Wright, Director and Curator of Fresh Sound, recently returned from a six month sojourn in New York where she explored the city by attending 160 concerts, theater and dance events. Wright now wants to share with her fellow San Diegans some of the great music she experienced on her trip.

The first two concerts are March 6th and April 9th (see below for details). In May and June we hope to include New York musicians David Shively, percussionist; Mary Rowell, violinist and Eve Beglarian, composer, electronics; Evan Ziporyn, clarinets; and maybe Caleb Burham, violin; and Tristan Perich. - Dates to be determined, check back often.

April 9th, Fresh Sound @ Space 4 Art,
James Moore, solo guitar

James is a member of the Dither Electric Guitar Quartet and is here for the second time as I love what he does -- always different and elegant. This concert featured new transcriptions of the music of Lou Harrison, Nine of the Etudes from John Zorn’s Book of Heads, premieres from Larry Polansky, and Molly Thompson who joined us this evening. He played their music on a National Steel Guitar, not usual. What was usual was James’ brilliant performance. He opened with Lou Harrison’s. The three pieces, beginning with his 1952 “Serenade”, were lovely. Zorn’s Etudes were, not surprisingly, was the quirky ones utilizing balloons and chop-sticks, voice and even fingers. After intermission the music of Larry Polansky’s. These songs sung effectively by James were particularly moving for me: “Eskimo Lullaby, ” “Sweet Betsy from PIke, ” and a Shaker tune. I always seem to like those Shaker tunes; maybe “‘tis a gift to be simple” is so. Molly Thompson’s “Blowback” was gorgeous and political - not an easy combination. Fresh Sound at Space 4 Art: FIRST CONCERT

Jeff Parker, guitar; Ben Goldberg, clarinet, Ches Smith, drums - photo by Michael Klayman

Fresh Sound Music
Space 4 Art - San Diego, CA

Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Ches Smith, drums; Jeff Parker, guitar

This was the first Fresh Sound concert at Space 4 Art and it went well; thank god. There was a full house and the space worked: lighting, sound, set up, everything. AND, the music was terrific. They played mostly Ben’s compositions which were both ear and mind opening: sophisticated.

The trio will continue to tour and I am sure will come up with a name for themselves soon. The band received a standing ovation and blessed us with an encore. Listening to these three great musicians was a thrill. This was the world premiere of them performing together but you wouldn’t have guessed it. They listened to each other and responded in a fluid and evolving manner.
